G.J. Gardner franchisees
Shane and Kirsty McConnell, owners of Tauranga’s G.J. Gardner franchise, have always loved making something out of nothing. It’s a philosophy they apply to the new homes they build every year, as well as the broader Tauranga community in which they live and work. \nBut personal success isn’t what drives Shane and Kirsty. Driven by a higher purpose they call ‘live to give’, Shane and Kirsty recognise their blessings and are passionate about giving back to their community. As their business grew so did their philanthropic aspirations and with Findex’s support, they set up a charitable a trust called the Shaker Foundation to support charitable foundations in the local region.

East by West Ferries
With a passion for the water and an interest in alternative forms of sustainable public transport, Jeremy Ward, Managing Director of East by West Ferries, made his dreams a reality in late 2021 with the launch of the first electric ferry service in the southern hemisphere.  \nOvercoming a ‘tough’ first decade in business, Jeremy persisted through the challenges to make East by West Ferries a viable business. Then in 2018, he assembled a team to start work on the new electric ferry. Now, the technology developed by Jeremy and his team is being sought after by companies throughout the world including North America, Asia and Australia.

Fortuna Group
Driven by their desire to be good custodians of the land and pass that on to the next generation of farmers, David and Kay Dodunski, founders of dairy farming company, Fortuna Group, have built a unique business model that offers their employees a pathway to financial independence. \nWith the firm belief there had to be a different succession model from handing down farms from one generation to the next, Fortuna Group is governed by an independent committee and focuses on generating opportunities for everyone that works in the company - employees, families, shareholders and stakeholders alike.

As an employer of one of the handful of female tradespeople working in the New Zealand plumbing, gas fitting and drain laying sector and with a woman sitting at the helm, Straight Flush Plumbing are defying the stereotypes that trades businesses are known for. \nLed by husband and wife team, Jeremy and Ngaire Mansfield, Straight Flush Plumbing have quadrupled in size since commencing business in 2007. And with plans for exponential growth over the next ten years, including two new sites, they’re only just getting started.

Brothers, Greg and Mark Fahey, are the co-founders of BISON Group; a New Zealand technology company whose development of both a smart scale system and portable container lifting technology for shipping, has seen them grow rapidly since launching in 2015. \nWith customers in 60 countries globally, Greg and Mark explain how the BISON Group’s rapid trajectory has been supported and sustained through a holistic approach leveraging cashflow advice, budgeting, stock systems, accounting and compliance, and specialist tax.

McDonald's franchisees
With ketchup running through their veins, McDonald’s franchisee owners, Glen Simmons and Ben Holden started as teenagers at separate McDonald’s restaurants. Their paths merged when they both joined the corporate team and, before long, the opportunity to become a franchisee came up and they took it. \nThat was 14 years ago and, since then, Glen and Ben have grown to own and run 11 restaurants. Guided by Senior Partner in Accounting and Business Advisory, Simon File, they’ve grown a small franchise empire. And now, with the help of Senior Partner in Wealth Management, Jo Potts, they’re learning how to extract the value they’ve built in their business to set themselves up for a life together beyond the famed golden arches.

OnTrack Tasmania
Fuelled by his belief in social justice and social change, Nick Thomas started National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) service provider, OnTrack Tasmania, three years ago as a sole trader. Today, he employs 500 staff, who support over 400 participants with services that provide community access, pathway planning, independent living and social programs.\nWith ten years in the community sector prior to starting OnTrack Tasmania, Nick believes in the power of support and social inclusion to bring about meaningful change in people's lives. Through his programs, participants can come together to socialise and learn new things, spend time in the community, make friends and develop their skills.

Millah Murrah Angus Stud
Ross and Dimity Thompson run the Millah Murrah Angus Stud on their Goonamurrah property at Bathurst with their three young girls. Millah Murrah has set numerous records at their bull sales, including a world record average of more than $34,000 for 118 bulls at the 2021 sale, with two bulls setting an Australian record for the Angus breed at $280,000 & $240,000. A secondary aspect to the business is embryo sales from some of the top females in their herd. \nRoss and Dimity share Millah Murrah’s journey including the successful succession planning process that saw Ross take over the farm from his father, Wyatt, along with insights into their business operations, thoughts on superannuation and off-farm investments.

From humble beginnings when they purchased a small parcel of undeveloped land in Far North Queensland more than 40 years ago, Des and Paula Chapman have built Rocky Ponds Produce into one of the most innovative and technologically advanced fruit and vegetable growers in the country. \nWith a driving focus on innovation and automation, Des and Paula have overcome challenges with water supply and, with the help of their son, Evan, implemented state of the art irrigation systems to supply specially designed nurseries in which they trial up to 500 new seeds every year.
